A record number of scholars from Nanfang College, Guangzhou (NCG) have been named in the 2025 World’s Top 2% Scientists list, compiled by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier. NCG researchers were recognised across both the career-long and single-year impact lists, placing the College among China’s leading private higher education institutions in terms of the number of scholars included.
The World’s Top 2% Scientists list assesses researchers across 22 broad fields and 174 subfields using citation metrics and other indicators of scholarly impact. Drawing on a pool of nearly seven million researchers worldwide, it comprises two categories: a career-long impact list measuring influence over the course of a scientist’s career, and a single-year impact list focusing on the preceding year.
Among this year’s NCG scholars, President Tao Tang and Vice President Steve Wenbin Liu were named on both the career-long and single-year impact lists. Vice President Shuang-Hua Yang was included in the career-long list, while Professor Tieyong Zeng, Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, was recognised on the single-year list. Professor Tang also ranked among the world’s top 100 researchers in his subfield in both categories.

An internationally recognised scholar in computational mathematics, Professor Tao Tang is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of both the European Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). His work on high-order numerical methods for partial differential equations and computational fluid dynamics has gained wide recognition. His honours include the First Prize in Natural Science from the Ministry of Education and the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award. He has also been invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), held every four years. Professor Tang, who also serves as Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, joined NCG as President in 2024.

Before joining NCG as Vice President in 2024, Professor Steve Wenbin Liu held academic positions at Imperial College London and the University of Kent. He earned his PhD from the University of Leeds and has served as an Overseas Professor at the Evaluation Centre of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an Overseas Assessor in management and mathematics for the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Chair Professor in the Faculty of Business and Management at Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University. His work spans management science and computational mathematics.

Professor Shuang-Hua Yang specialises in Industrial Internet security and industrial artificial intelligence. A graduate of Zhejiang University, where he earned his PhD, he is a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, a nationally appointed expert, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Fellow of the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC), and a Senior Member of the IEEE. Professor Yang joined NCG as Vice President in 2025.

Professor Tieyong Zeng joined NCG as Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 2025, bringing extensive experience at the intersection of mathematics, data science and artificial intelligence. He previously served as Director of the Center for Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and earned his PhD from Université Paris 13. An expert under a national programme for high-level overseas talent, he has also served as Chief Scientist of a key project under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Strategic Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation programme. Professor Zeng received the Hong Kong Mathematical Society’s Young Scholar Award in 2021. His research spans data science, optimisation theory, image processing and inverse problems.
The recognition of scholars across different fields reflects NCG’s continuing efforts to strengthen its academic community and research capacity through the recruitment and development of high-calibre talent. Building on this progress, the College will continue to foster a supportive research environment and strengthen talent development, with the aim of contributing to scientific and technological innovation and the cultivation of research talent in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
