The first lecture of NCG’s “Forum on Teacher Cultivation” was held on the morning of May 8 in the auditorium of Multiple-use Building, where Zhou Xiaohua, the professor, doctoral supervisor and director of the Department of Biostatistics of Peking University was invited to make a special report entitled “Casual Inferences and Statistical Methods for Diagnostic Medicine and Analysis of Skewed Data”. Academician Tang Tao, President of NCG, Associate Professor Zhi Xiucong, Deputy Party Secretary of NCG’s CPC Committee and Vice President, Associate Professor Gong Ming, Vice President, heads of relevant departments, teachers and students listened, totaling nearly 1,000 audience. The lecture was moderated by Professor Cao Guangfu, Vice President of NCG.
In the lecture, Professor Zhou Xiaohua made an in-depth analysis to the importance of TCM syndrome diagnosis scale and the methodological challenges in its development. He pointed out that the lack of objective and standardized evaluation methods towards diagnosis and efficacy reflecting traditional characteristics is the bottleneck of TCM’s development, to which improving the research and production of TCM syndrome diagnosis scale is the key. He then further introduced the theoretical basis and methodology of studies to the scale, emphasizing the significance of having the scale throughout TCM’s modernization, especially carrying out its role in promoting TCM clinical research.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Zhou introduced his team's breakthrough in the research, especially the newly developed TCM syndrome diagnosis and efficacy evaluation platform. This platform provides strong technical support for the modernization of TCM, demonstrating the great potential of combining traditional Chinese medicine with modern science and technology.
In the lecture’s Q&A session, participants actively asked questions and discussed, bringing intensive exchanges on topics such as the treatment of data missing, the combination of big data artificial intelligence model and traditional statistical method model, etc.
The success of the first lecture of “Forum on Teacher Cultivation” has brought a high-level academic feast to teachers and students. In his concluding speech, Vice President Cao Guangfu highly appreciated Professor Zhou Xiaohua’s wonderful report and the active participation of teachers and students. He stressed the important role of statistics in the study to the accuracy of TCM diagnosis and of the individual differences in TCM diagnosis methods. He noted that only results proved to be correct after repeated tests could be claimed scientific, and statistics has provided an effective tool for this target.
“Forum on Teacher Cultivation” was set to meet the goal providing an academic exchange platform for teachers and students to access the latest research and cutting-edge views. Being teacher-student-oriented and teaching-disciplines-based, the platform adheres to professional development, works constantly to activate academic trials in the campus to improve the capacity of teaching reform and scientific research, giving full play to the leading role of superb teachers, improving teachers’ professional ability in teaching and scientific research, in turn enhancing the soft-power and high-quality development of NCG.
