On the morning of April 30th, Professor Wang Zhemin, tenured professor from the University of Wisconsin, visited the School of Accounting to deliver a lecture titled 'How to Take the First Step in Scientific Research.' Executive Dean of the School of Accounting, Wei Jianguo, along with more than fifty faculty members, attended this event.
At the beginning of the lecture, Dean Wei Jianguo delivered a welcome speech and introduced Professor Wang Zhemin's contributions and academic achievements in the fields of accounting and management. He hoped that the faculty members, especially newly appointed teachers, would actively seek guidance and learn from Professor Wang to enhance their teaching and research capabilities.
Professor Wang Zhemin used his own research paper 'Reputation Protection and Audit Quality' as an example to provide an in-depth analysis to his writing approach, perspective and breakthroughs, sharing his research insights. He emphasized that when choosing research topics, one should read extensively, summarize the content, methods, and findings of previous studies, and contemplate the possibilities for further research directions. He argued that research topics need not strive for complete novelty but expand upon or alter empirical methods based on previous studies.
Furthermore, he underscored the importance of teaching in an academic career, stating that educators should enjoy the process of lecturing and strive to explain theories clearly and comprehensibly. Additionally, he suggested incorporating practical case studies into lectures to help students better understand and apply theoretical concepts.
This lecture not only provided an opportunity for the faculty of the School of Accounting to engage with an internationally renowned scholar but also offered valuable insights and inspiration on how to conduct scientific research. The School of Accounting will continue to invite more distinguished scholars to participate in various forms of academic exchange, aiming to enhance the school's research standards and quality.
