The year of 2018 is the last year of the second stage of the three Three-Year Development Plans which can be respectively summarized as “laying foundation, forging characteristics, and reaching upper level”, and is the critical juncture of the pilot stage of application-oriented transformation. In order to promote the college's application-oriented transformation and further foster the characteristics of the school's disciplines and specialties, September 1-2, the college held a seminar on Transformation Development and Characteristic Construction to accelerate the implementation of the work of specialty construction and teaching reform. Participants included President Yu Shiyou, Secretary of Party Committee Li Jianchao and other party and administration leaders, middle-ranked cadres, faculty members with senior titles and doctoral degrees, and representatives from industry-university-research cooperation organizations. Secretary of Party Committee Li Jianchao presided over the seminar.


Special guest to the seminar, Professor Gu Yong’an, specialist of MOE School Planning, Construction and Development Center, Dean of Application-oriented Institutional Research Center of the Institutional Research Branch of China Higher Education Association, and Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Changshu Institute of Technology, made a keynote speech. President Yu Shiyou made an important address, and Vice President Professor Huang Jingbo, Assistant President Professor Huang Nansong made keynote speeches in sequence. All of teaching units reported summaries of their work on application-oriented transformation and characteristics construction, and middle-ranked cadres held panel discussions around the subject and keynote speeches of the seminar.

President Yu Shiyou, in his address titled “Landing and Re-landing: Refine Characteristics and Elevate the Status of Major Programs”, analyzed existing problems, laid out possible approaches and called for consensus of development. He made four suggestions to carry out the college’s development plan. First, we must bear in mind our mission and goal, with primary concern being talent cultivation and due attention given to knowledge transmission and students’ growth, and in particular avoid falling for the training schemes of public universities, i.e., back to the mode of splitting practical application from theoretical expertise. Second, we should forge our own university culture into one that is based on just, fair and democratic decisions but responsible for truth and history, and apply such internal mindsets to push forward the college’s development and to breed students’ independent thinking ability and innovative spirit. Third, we need to constantly improve management regulations as they are a basic part of university culture, by revising those regulations incompatible with the college’s development, so as to create a platform and environment that is fair and beneficial to teacher’ and students’ development. Fourth, we should implement the application-oriented talent development programs, as the programs, textbooks and faculties constitute the core of the college’s transformation development. Deans of all departments should oblige themselves to the application-oriented programs and textbooks, to the orientation of every teacher’s professional development and the making of every syllabus, as well as the training of new teachers and the building of faculty teams. Yu Shiyou stressed that to ensure the implementation of the development plan, it is imperative to take the integration of industry, university and research and the fusion of education as the prior strategies and consolidation of talent development programs, textbook construction and faculty team building as significant components of transformation development.


Vice President Huang Jingbo made a keynote problem-oriented speech on the school innovation, characteristic construction and teaching reform, and provided suggestive guidelines for its transformation development. Assistant President Professor Huang Nansong gave a keynote speech on how to find the right niche regarding the construction of application-oriented institutions based on his all-round investigation of the whole college and in line with the current educational environment and social needs. Professor Gu Yong’an made a speech in the title of “Key Issues Concerning China’s Application-oriented Higher Education and Its Intensive Construction”.


President Yu Shiyou made the closing speech for the seminar, approving the achievement of each department. He said that the work of all departments and is solid and accurate, and has made tangible achievements in the transformation and development and the construction of characteristics, and the characteristics layout is taking shape. Meanwhile, President Yu Shiyou gave new requirements on how to further refine characteristics, enhance qualities and accelerate the implementation of the college’s development plan. He suggested that the college would enhance qualities through four measures. The first is to strengthen faculty team building and optimize faculty composition and professional title evaluating and granting criteria. The second is to establish powerful leadership for each teaching unit and enhance organizing and coordinating abilities so as to push forward transformation development and characteristics construction. The third is to speed up the development of backbone teachers, cultivate a group of young teachers, usher them into academia, so as to enliven the faculty team. The fourth is to reform the salary system by gradually adopting the annual salary system and bringing forth an annuity plan. He emphasized that each teaching unit should form the characteristics of discipline, specialty and department in training objectives, training methods and practical teaching, and finally form the characteristics of Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University, which is the core competitive power of the college. There are three key points in boosting the college’s transformation development and landing its characteristics construction plan: talent development programs, textbook construction and faculty team building.


Ever since the school decided on the "three-year" development plan, the whole college has been committed to renewing approaches and setting priorities and hence has made significant accomplishments in all aspects, and South Characteristics are taking shape. The seminar resulted in an analysis of the situation and task confronting the college, a re-specification of development goals, and the consolidating of agreements on future development, which clarifies the direction and approach for realizing the objectives of “three three-year” development plans, boosting the application-oriented transformation development, and unswervingly striding on the road of building a first-class private university in China.
