[China Youth Online] Choosing Roommates by Personalized Tags: New Deal at Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University

CYOL (Qiu Shiling, China Youth Daily; Lin Jie, Reporter of CYOL) In recent days, universities and colleges are welcoming new students. To streamline the registration procedure, Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University has upgraded its “orientation system”, allowing the new students to complete relevant procedures in advance and hence all new arrivals, except those who need to go though the Green Lane, can go directly to the dorm buildings and check in.

Among the 5719 Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University freshmen, nearly 50 percent are post-2000s, with two only aged 14. To better meet the new generation’s particular needs, and to establish a harmonious dormitory culture, the college has added into its orientation system a self-tagging function, i.e., the freshmen can indicate their interests and hobbies, work and rest timetable and living styles, etc., through such labels as “Cosplayer”, “OCD patient”, “graduate school pursuer”, “sport-lover”, and so on. Such labels allow the students to choose their roommates out of their own will.

“The tag I chose is graduate school pursuer”, says Miss Chen enrolled into the program Chinese Language and Literature, in the hope of encouraging and inspiring each other while preparing to sit for the graduate school examination. Meanwhile, remarks left in the college’s official WeChat public account show that some students choose to “let it be” and wish to “get along well with each other”.

The college has prepared over 200 big red packages for new students coming from disadvantaged families. The “Empowering” Project, as a composite abilities improvement project, was set up in consideration of students’ actual needs, their future development and their subjective desires. It is mainly intended to benefit the disadvantaged students by combining funding and empowering into a platform that caters to students’ growth and development. Drawing upon the disciplinary resources, the college has offered a range of practical training courses covering such subjects as Chinese calligraphy, music, basic medical skills, career planning, photoshop (PS), etc.

Reportedly, a part of the project is the ‘mini-teacher’ program with the intention that the bulk of comprehensive knowledge and the sense of responsibility can be transferred from one generation to the next. As Nie Qiong demonstrates, the college has shifted its funding from materialistic to development-oriented, from other-made to self-made, and from supported to supporting, and thus empowering every student to find the stage and realize their own dreams. To date, over 800 hundred students have benefited from the project and the volunteers on site today are all beneficiaries of the project.

In the wake of renovating its canteens last year, Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University has put great efforts and investments into its hardware infrastructure construction. Accordingly, all teaching buildings are equipped with air conditioners and the whole campus is covered with WIFI access, which is sure to provide the teachers and students a better college life experience. In addition, “intelligent take-out food cases” are installed in front of each dorm building, saving the students time waiting for their meals to arrive. As revealed by the logistics department, the college will be committed, as always, to improving its conditions and services of all kinds, to relieve the parents of worries and to assure the students of their choices.
