[New Express] Choose Roommates with “Personalized Tags”, Receive Big Future Packages: Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University Welcomes 5719 Freshmen

Online registration and payment, personalized roommate grouping, and a foreseeable future . . .

September 7th is the first day Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University welcomes its 5719 freshmen of Grade 2018. The college has upgraded its electronic ‘Orientation System’ so that the new comers of different programs can do their registration at different periods of time, and once the online information collection is done, they can go directly to the students’ residence and check in. For those who need to register through the Green Lane, the college has exclusively prepared a big package of ‘Future Gifts’.

Choosing Roommates with “Similar Tastes” by Setting Personalized Tags

Among the 5719 freshmen, nearly 50 percent are post-2000s, i.e., born in 2000 or later, with two only aged 14. To better meet the new generation’s particular needs, and to establish a harmonious dormitory culture, the college has added into its orientation system a self-tagging function so that the freshmen can indicate their interests and hobbies, work and rest timetable and living styles, etc., by tagging themelves as “Cosplayer”, “OCD patient”, “graduate school pursuer”, “sport-lover”, and so on. Such tags allow the students to choose their favorable roommates for the four years to come. “I’d like to live with graduate school pursuers”, says Miss Chen enrolled into the program of Chinese Language and Literature, in the hope of encouraging and inspiring each other while preparing to sit for the graduate school examination. Meanwhile, remarks left in the college’s official WeChat public account show that some students choose to “let it be” and wish to “get along well with each other”.

An “Empowering” Package for the disadvantaged students

At the site of Green Lane, over 200 big red packages are ready, with rolling promo videos and a number of volunteers alongside giving tips on how to use the packages.

It is said that the “Empowering” Packages are gifts prepared by the college for students of disadvantaged families. Enclosed in each package are an introduction to the project, a call for essays on family culture, and a 200RMB gift voucher. Against the backdrop of the National Targeted Poverty Alleviation Project, the college has set student funding as one of its key priorities.

Besides offering hundreds of part-time jobs with increased wages, the college has established a student funding system that integrates funding and educating, i.e., not only providing the disadvantaged students secure funds, but more importantly offering them opportunities to fully improve their qualities and characters.

According to Nie Qiong, Director of the Department of Student Affairs, the funding system, as part of a composite abilities improvement project, was set up in consideration of students’ actual needs, their future development and their subjective desires. It is mainly intended to benefit the disadvantaged students by combining funding and empowering into a platform that caters to students’ growth and development. Drawing upon the disciplinary resources, the college has offered a range of practical training courses covering such subjects as Chinese calligraphy, music, basic medical skills, career planning, photoshop (PS), etc.

In the light of the project, every student of each course can apply to be the “mini-teacher” for the next semester and, if admitted, can transmit what they have learned to their succeeding fellow students. In doing so, the bulk of composite knowledge and the sense of responsibility can be transferred from one generation to the next. "

" The “Emppowering” Project is not restricted within classrooms, laboratories and other physical spaces, but extended to off-campus social practices, public services and other invisible spaces as well, which means the beneficiaries are not only teachers and students on campus but also the social mass.

As Director Nie Qiong demonstrates, the college has shifted its funding from materialistic to development-oriented, from other-made to self-made, and from supported to supporting, and thus empowering every student to find the stage and realize their own dreams. To date, over 800 hundred students have benefited from the projectincluding the volunteers working on site today.

Dorm buildings with elevators and Inexpensive de Luxe Canteens Appear in Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University

Last year witnessed great changes in Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University canteens which were then hailed as “canteens of others’ universities”. In the wake of that, the college has put great efforts and investments into its hardware infrastructure construction, with a view to providing teachers and students a better college life experience. Apart from the inexpensive de luxe canteens, the upper-graders are amazed to find new dorm buildings equipped with elevators, teaching buildings with air conditioners, and a campus with free WIFI access, exclaiming that they regret “coming too early”. In addition, the college has collaborated with third-party businesses to place in front of each dorm building “intelligent take-out food cases”. Students who have ordered take-out food do not have to wait in the lobbies for long before the arrival of their ordered meals. As revealed by the logistics department, the college will be committed, as always, to improving its conditions and services of all kinds, to relieve the parents of worries and to assure the students of their choices.
